A solution within the United Kingdom is to source energy from tidal areas such as rivers and estuaries that harness vast energies on a bi annual basis. Simply creating a dammed area very much like the lock effects that you get in the canals, and introducing a generator form such as a turbine. The power can be utilised by using its natural kinetic source which is stored at the highest part of the tide, then on release of the water the pressure this then drives the turbine(s) and allows water to flow to naturally along its path without effecting wet lowlands and breeding areas. Energy would be captured from this natural resource twice daily, allowing cheaper energy bills to the public without creating a huge carbon foot print.
Shipping would only be affected as they pass through a lock system, just like canals but on a larger scale. It may slow vessels down by several hours, but with natural resources such as tidal the offset compared to living with a nuclear plant on your door step is far more practical.
